Plastic materials are more and more replacing metal pipes and fittings in domestic plumbing and heating systems worldwide.

 

In the last 30 years, pressure piping systems made of Polypropylene Random Copolymers (PP-R) have been selected and appreciated by the Plumbing Industry.

 

We have recently assisted to an evolution of the system components but PP-R basically remained the same of the early ‘80s.

 

A few years ago a new PP-R grade appeared on the scene: PP-RCT to which β-PPR belongs.

 

A new generation of materials using a special β-nucleation process

 

The new formulation and production process of PP-RCT allow pipes produced with this material to perform at higher stress conditions and high temperatures.

 

Pressure tests on pipes made of PP-RCT demonstrate a 50 year strength at 70ºC with 5 MPa, compared to 3.2 MPa for standard PP-R materials.

NIRON β PP-RCT pipe has been tested in compliance with ASTMF2023 for the classification to chlorine resistance by Exova LAB.

 

The material in its pipe configuration of SDR 7,4 has been found to be resistant to 4,3 ppm of Sodium Hypochlorite (4,3 ppm of free chlorine) at conditions as per Class 3 at 5,5 bar for a period of over 50 years (50% at 60°C and 50% at 23°C).


In particular, the regression of the material shows an estimated durability of 35 years for continuous use at 60°C.
